Prayer: Week of September 5, 2021

Shepherd of our hearts, pursue us and do not forget us. Like sheep, we go astray throughout this life and we are in danger of losing ourselves on some unknown path, of falling suddenly into a pit, and of being devoured by savage beasts. These are but images, but the reality is just as dangerous. We are naive, even twisted, and we need Your wisdom. We are feeble and we need Your deliverance. Born into this world without God, we need the love of Jesus that comes to save us and transform us. Amen.

King of Kings, You who give authority to the governments of this world, have pity on those who govern and on those who are governed. Give us, at every level of our society, a government that is competent, efficient, and compassionate. Give them the wisdom necessary for the task, as well as a heart disposed to do what is right and to protect those who are vulnerable. Fearsome and almighty God, deliver us from that deadly danger, the fear of man. We sometimes fear what others may think of us, or we fear that someone may harm us for doing what is right. That fear can paralyze us, make us useless, and even put us in eternal danger. Lord, come rescue us. Show us Your glory. Give us confidence in Your promises. Heavenly Father, Jesus said that those who are truly His brothers and sisters are those who do your will. He also said that the big difference between the wise person and the fool is that the first puts the Word of God into practice, while the second one merely listens to it without changing anything whatsoever in his or her life. Eternal God, we pay homage to your wisdom, which surpasses our comprehension and even our imagination. What human would have imagined a plan of salvation like that revealed in Scripture? Who could imagine that the Almighty would come among us so as to be terribly mistreated by His creation? Lord, blessed be your name in all the earth! Give us the faith and courage to entrust ourselves to Your plan and to Your goodness. Often we cannot see what you are doing, but our night is light for you. Help us to trust in your wisdom. Amen.

Lord, Light of the nations, you who are at once love and wisdom, guide us in these uncertain times. Life becomes complicated everywhere; everywhere there is sickness, everywhere there is politics. As individuals, we need your wisdom. As neighbourhoods, cities, regions, provinces, and countries, we need your wisdom. Give us some of your infinite love that we may better love our neighbour in concrete ways during these murky times. Give us some of your stunning light that we may present the Gospel of Jesus Christ to those who are blind without knowing it. All for your glory. Amen.
